Old people families in the city of Lisbon: solidarity networks and social class

This paper presents findings of a study on solidarity networks of the elderly and their interaction with their families. Five hundred senior individuals (one per family), living in Lisbon, Portugal, were interviewed. The participants were selected through a stratified sample of Lisbon residents, where women represent 60% of the total sample. The survey was also complemented by semi-structured interviews.
Results show the importance of the family network in all social classes. Some specific dynamics and differences noticed between lower and upper class are discussed.
